Where draws on highly distilled aspects of the natural landscape and touchstones of the virtual landscape—map pointers, speech bubbles, placeholder avatars—to elicit a sense of the emotional and physical distances between people. Silences, doubts, connections, and misunderstandings hang in the blank spaces.
Work from this project will be up in the Graphic Arts Workshop Gallery as part of a new monthly series for the Dogpatch art cooperative. See more Where, including microzines and animations.
Elisabeth Nicula is a San Francisco-based artist and designer. She was selected as a top-ten San Francisco Open Studios artist at ArtLaunch 2014, and this is her first solo show in San Francisco.
“Outsides” shows new work from Annie Vought and former Graphic Arts Workshop member Anthony Ryan, who have been colleagues since 2009 and both have highly process-focused practices through which they explore the medium of paper. The exhibition will feature new prints, drawings, cut works on paper, and woven works on paper from the two artists, who approach the medium with a steady, intensely physical attention.
Adobe Books is open Monday through Friday 12 pm to 8 pm and Saturday and Sunday 11 am to 8 pm
Nine artists of the Graphic Arts Workshop are participating in this year’s San Francisco Open Studios: Melanie Dorson, Eddie Lee, Elisabeth Nicula, Gail Morrison, Andrey Semyonov, Barbara Stikker, Toru Sugita, Geneviève L’Heureux, and Mariko Jesse. All will be on hand to explain their processes and inspirations.
In contrast to today’s world of technology, many of the techniques used at the Graphic Arts Workshop are centuries-old, although most have modern (and less toxic) refinements. They include etching, woodcut, linocut, letterpress, monotype and monoprint, lithograph, screenprint, and endless combinations and variations. Each artist works in his or her own style, but all produce original fine art prints, not reproductions.
A wide variety of prints of many types and price-points will be on display and available for purchase.
The event is free, and all are welcome to come explore the world of fine art printmaking.
