Hard Cover Bookbinding Workshop
Saturday and Sunday, June 7, 2025 and June 8, 2025, 10am-4pm
In this two-day workshop, you will learn two essential bookbinding techniques: Link Stitch Binding and Hard Cover Case Binding. Gain foundational knowledge of bookbinding, familiarize yourself with essential tools, understand core binding principles, and take home two handmade books.
The instructor, Jingjing Yang, holds a BFA in Graphic Design, an MA in Fine Art, an MFA in Printmaking, and is currently enrolled in a professional Bookbinding program. Jingjing is excited to share expertise and answer questions related to bookbinding, printmaking, and graphic design.

Day 1: Link Stitch Binding
Introduction:
- Understanding grain direction and book anatomy
- Overview of bookbinding tools suitable for home use
- Selecting paper types and adhesives
- Choosing the appropriate sewing thread
Link Stitch Binding:
- Creating a punching guide
- Mastering the sewing structure
- Optional: Attaching cover boards and wrapping with decorative paper
Goal for Day 1:
- Comprehend basic book structures and tool usage
- Complete a Link Stitch Binding book
Day 2: Hard Cover Case Binding (Quarter Binding Style)
- Determining the appropriate board thickness
- Crafting a custom headband
- Creating a new punching guide
- Sewing structure with Ramie Bands
- Adding the headband and lining the spine (using super crash and paper)
- Constructing the book “case”
- “Casing in” the book
Optional:
- Q&A session on bookbinding techniques, supplies, equipment, and resources
Goal for Day 2:
- Master the sewing structure
- Complete a Hard Cover Case Binding book
Student Should Bring:
- Two containers with lids (for adhesive)
- Water jar
- Large round-tip brush (for applying glue)
- Optional: Decorative paper
- Small cutting mat
- Olfa knife (not a utility knife)
- Punching needle or awl (for bookbinding)
- Scissors
- Notebook or pads for note-taking
Provided by Instructor:
- Bone folder
- PVA adhesive and Methyl Cellulose
- Pre-pressed and trimmed textblock paper
- Sewing needles and threads
- Cardboard and binder’s board
- Punching jig and needle
- Decorative paper and bookcloth
- Sewing cords
Not Provided by Instructor:
- Cutting mat
- Scissors
- Glue brush
- Containers
