Ben James
Art has always been more than just a passion for me—it’s a reflection of my soul, my heritage, and my journey as a printmaking and ceramic artist from the San Francisco Bay Area, I share my life experiences and African American roots into my art work. Which is a celebration of diversity and a homage to the memories and stories that have shaped me.
Growing up, I was surrounded by a rich tapestry of cultures, and this has profoundly influenced my artistic vision. My unique style is a blend of these diverse influences, capturing moments of everyday life and infusing them with a sense of wonder and playfulness. In my etchings, I often depict people within their living spaces, creating scenes that are at once intimate and dreamlike. There’s a certain magic in balancing these elements, evoking atmospheres that invite viewers to step into a world of imagination
My educational journey has been a cornerstone of my artistic development. From earning my Bachelor of Arts in Ceramics & Glass at San Francisco State University to undergoing intensive ceramics projects at The Potters Studio in Berkeley, each step has enriched my craft. Summer workshops at Taller de Ceramica in Veracruz, years of ceramic studies at Laney College in Oakland, and focused printmaking studies at San Francisco City College have all contributed to my growth. Additionally, my residency at Ceiba Grafica in Veracruz and printmaking studies at the College of Marin have expanded my horizons and deepened my understanding of my art.
