Megan Broughton

My work is shaped by artist residencies in the Arctic regions. My experimental etchings celebrate the shared materiality of copperplate etching and polar ice and offer the opportunity to situate oneself within the climate crisis. The materials shape the work as overnight etches destroy copper, melting ice cubes and ferric chloride create imagery on their own, and drawings are fragmented. I enjoy working in this unpredictable way with the medium and discovering new possibilities.

I grew up in Los Angeles County and now live in San Francisco. After a 13 year long career in arts education, I am focusing on artmaking full-time. Though I love printmaking, I also draw, paint, and am developing ideas for immersive installations. Exhibition highlights include Crocker Kingsley Exhibitions, The Left Coast Annual, and shows at Highpoint Center for Printmaking and Richmond Art Center. My work has been awarded by Leah Ollman (Los Angeles Times, Art in America) and juried by Renee Cyla Villasenor (ICA+SF), Scott Shields (Crocker Art Museum), Dorka Keehn (public art advisor) and Bay Area curators Kevin B. Chen and Carrier Lederer, among others. Residencies include The Arctic Circle Residency (Svalbard), MaréMotrice (Greenland/Iceland), and In Cahoots (California). I’m a member of the California Society of Printmakers, Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art, and the Los Angeles Printmaking Society. I hold a BFA in fine Arts from CalArts and make work about the climate crisis, loss, transition, and materiality.
